Another Accompanied 6-Bell Arrangement – O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus

As many of you already know, Larry is the proud owner of a sling, having had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. Wearing this sling inspired him to write some accompanied 6-bell music!

Our latest 6-bell arrangement is the hymn O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus. The Welsh hymn tune EBENEZER was composed by Thomas John Williams, and first published in 1897. The tune has been used as the setting for several other hymns, including Once to Every Man and Nation, Dyma Gariad Fel Y Moroedd” (Here is Love,Vast as the Ocean), and Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us.

This arrangement is suitable for 2 or 3 ringers to play. The sheet music is available to purchase, download and print from Choraegus, our music site. An mp3 accompaniment track is also available to purchase separately. This can be useful if you don’t have a willing accompanist, or if you want to rehearse at home.

If you’re looking for a handbell piece for 2-4 ringers that doesn’t need an accompaniment track, we have an 8-bell version of O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus too!

New 8-Bell Music from Choraegus – I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

Thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music during this time of social distancing. Our latest 8-bell arrangement is the hymn I Want Jesus to Walk With Me. We recorded our demo video in March, before Larry had his shoulder surgery… and wow, doesn’t it look cold outside those windows? Now that summer has arrived in Michigan, we’re used to seeing the trees much less bare-looking!

This African-American spiritual is a song of lament, but also an assurance that Jesus walks beside anyone who’s suffering. It’s often heard during Lent and Holy Week, but can be used year-round in worship services.

I want Jesus to walk with me,
I want Jesus to walk with me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my trial, Lord, walk with me,
In my trials, Lord, walk with me,
When the shades of life are falling,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my troubles, Lord walk with me,
In my troubles, Lord walk with me,
When my life becomes a burden,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me
.”

New Accompanied 6-Bell Music – Canto de Esperanza / Song of Hope

Larry’s recovery from shoulder surgery is going well! He’s been seeing a physical therapist, and doing exercises throughout the day. It will still be a while before he can go back to playing our 8-bell duets, or picking up those heavy bass bells. In the meantine, he’s been enjoying the challenge of writing some music that only uses six bells. The sling is optional, of course.

Our latest 6-bell hymn arrangement is the popular traditional folk tune ARGENTINA. It’s the setting for the hymn Song of Hope, or Canto de Esperanza, with lyrics by Alvin Schutmaat. Suitable for any time of year, this lively piece will bring joy and hope to a worship service.

If you’d like to play Canto de Esperanza, the sheet music is available to purchase, download and print from Choraegus, our music site. An mp3 accompaniment track is also available to purchase separately.

New 6-Bell Music – Holy Manna

As many of you already know, Larry is recovering from shoulder surgery. It’s going to be a while before he’s able to lift anything (including handbells) using his right arm. We couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to play duets together! In recent weeks, Larry’s been having fun arranging music for six bells with piano accompaniment. Our first 6-bell arrangement was the traditional Scottish Gaelic tune BUNESSAN… and now we’re pleased to bring you a new arrangement of Holy Manna – for six handbells, piano, and optional sling.

New Handbell Music – You’re a Grand Old Flag – for 8 Bells

“You’re a grand old flag
You’re a high-flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev’ry heart beats true
Under red, white and blue
Where there’s never a boast or brag,
But should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag!”

Thank you to everyone who’s been playing our music in this time of lockdowns and social distancing! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is You’re a Grand Old Flag – a patriotic song written by George M Cohan in 1906. If you’re planning a socially-distant Flag Day or Fourth of July celebration, this arrangement would fun to play! The beginning and end sections are straightforward, with a more-challenging middle section to keep you on your toes.

Our continued thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music. We appreciate you all so much! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is the hymn How Firm a Foundation. This hymn was published in 1787 and has remained popular through the centuries. “Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”

Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan

New Handbell Music – Het Roosje – for 8 Bells

It’s the time of year when the residents of Holland, Michigan traditionally look forward to the start of the city’s annual Tulip Time Festival. The town displays over 5 million tulips. The city celebrates its Dutch heritage – with parades, music performances and Dutch dancing demonstration.

This year’s 91st Tulip Time Festival has been cancelled because of health concerns for the city’s residents and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who usually flock to the festival. Of course, no one told the tulips, so they will still bloom. Carla took the photo below during the 2019 festival, at Windmill Island Gardens.

Since moving to Holland in the summer of 2016, we’ve enjoyed finding traditional Dutch music that can be played using just 8 handbells. Our latest arrangement is the song Het Roosje, which translates as The Rose.

If you’d like to play this arrangement, you can purchase, download and print the sheet music from Choraegus, our music site.

New Handbell Music – Song of Hope (Canto de Esperanza)

Here’s our latest arrangement for 8 handbells – the popular hymn Song of Hope. The lyrics to this hymn were written by Alvin L. Schutmaat, a Michigan-born missionary to Latin America, and the melody (hymn tune ARGENTINA) is a traditional folk tune.

Song of Hope – recorded when we still had snow on the ground!

¡Dios de la esperanza, danos gozo y paz!
May the God of hope go with us every day,
Al mundo en crisis, habla tu verdad.

Filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.
Dios de la justicia, mándanos tu luz,

May the God of justice speed us on our way,
Luz y esperanza en la oscuridad.

Bringing light and hope to every land and race.”

Larry wrote this 8-bell arrangement for the TRC Ringers at Third Reformed Church here in Holland.
