The 2021 Kalamazoo Ringers Christmas Concert

The 2021 Kalamazoo Ringers Christmas Concert is tomorrow!

Kalamazoo Ringers Christmas Concert

We’re excited about this concert! On a Winter’s Night will be streamed on the Kalamazoo Ringers’ Facebook page at 4pm EST. We were all disappointed not to be able to rehearse and prepare our usual Christmas concert at Grace Harbor. Instead, we cautiously decided to gather only in small groups for this Christmas season – and it turned out to be a lot of fun! The concert is an interesting mixture of handbell solos, duets and small ensembles – with a lot of Choraegus music!

Kalamazoo Ringers Christmas

We’re particularly excited to share our 5-octave arrangement of Of the Father’s Love Begotten. This is a new piece that we haven’t published yet. It will be available to download from Choraegus in May next year. There’s also an exciting arrangement of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, where we’re joined by Martha and Gary Matthews on flute and piano. There’s a nice mixture of small ensemble pieces, from Jason Krug’s beautiful Coventry, played on bell tree, to the pure fun of Valerie Stephenson’s Caroler’s Hoedown… and if you stay tuned until the end, we’ll even show you some outtakes!

The Kalamazoo Ringers Christmas Concert will be live on the Kalamazoo Ringers Facebook page at 4:00pm on Sunday, December 19. The video will be available to watch on Facebook and YouTube afterwards.

We have high hopes of presenting an in-person concert next spring!

Need a Handbell Performance for Christmas? Book Soon!

If you need a handbell performance for Christmas 2021, it might be a good idea to book soon! After last year’s very quiet holiday season, it’s encouraging to see Christmas events and worship services being planned. Our calendar is filling up fast!

Our holiday performance season will start on November 26, at the Kerstmarkt in Downtown Holland. We always look forward to this festive outdoor event, where we’ll be braving the chilly weather to play Christmas carols outdoors. It’s a great way to start the holiday season, and a wonderful place to shop for locally-made gifts, crafts and food.

Handbell performance for Christmas - Kerstmarkt

Handbells are perfect for the holidays!

We’ll be back at the Kerstmarkt on December 10th. This year we’re also looking forward to performing with the Zeeland Community Band at their Christmas concert, as well as giving another handbell duet program at Hudsonville Library, and some private events throughout December. We’ll share more details about our public performances soon.

Handbell music can bring a magical and festive atmosphere to any Christmas or holiday event. We can give a seasonal performance of carols and holiday music. We can provide background music to add that special welcoming touch to your corporate event, community group celebration, winter wedding, or holiday gathering. Nothing says Christmas quite as well as the traditional sound of English handbells. Our duet performances can bring the sounds of the season to community events, hotel lobbies, department stores, airports, shopping boutiques, social groups and private house parties alike.

Thinking of booking a handbell performance for Christmas?

As a handbell duo, we take up far less room than a traditional bell choir would. That makes us ideal for venues where space is limited, or where social distancing is still being observed. We still have a few dates available for 2021 (including some Sundays during Advent), so if you need handbells for your Christmas event or worship service, you’re welcome to get in touch with us. If we can fit your event into our schedule, we will.

Contact us with some details about your event, and we’ll check our availability and provide a quote for you. Handbells are the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season!

We’ll talk about the history of our instruments, and the techniques used in playing them. Audience members will also have the chance to ask all their burning questions about handbells!

We’re happy to be returning to the Village at the Pines for the second time. This is a private event for residents of this Grand Haven senior community only.

Jesus, Good Above All Other – for Handbells, 2-3 Octaves

“Jesus, good above all other,
gentle child of gentle mother,
in a stable born our brother,
give us grace to persevere.

Jesus, cradled in a manger,
for us facing every danger,
living as a homeless stranger,
make we thee our King most dear.”

We were recently going through some old memory cards from our video camera, and we found a forgotten-about recording we’d made of this gentle hymn. The tune is QUEM PASTORES – a 15th century tune, sometimes shortened to Quempas, also used for Christmas to describe the shepherds and their journey to Bethlehem. In more recent years, the melody has also been used for the hymn Like a Mighty River Flowing – so it’s a very versatile tune!

Here’s the recording we made, many months ago. It’s a little unpolished, since it was one of our first attempts at playing full-choir music with just the two of us. Still, you should get a reasonable idea of how the piece sounds:

More information about this arrangement

Jesus, Good Above All Other is for 2-3 octaves of handbells. The handchimes add something extra, but if you don’t have handchimes, the notes can all be played on handbells with no problem. It’s a Level 2+ arrangement, in 6/8 – and it’s one of our most straightforward full-choir arrangements. If you’d like to play it, you’ll find the sheet music available to download from Choraegus – available either as an individual score or as a full-choir score.

Praise the Lord, Sing Hallelujah – for Handbells

“Praise the Lord, sing Hallelujah,
from the heavens praise God’s name!
Praise the Lord, our great creator;
all you angels, praise proclaim.
All you hosts, together praising,
sun and moon and stars on high.
Praise the Lord, O heav’ns of heavens,
and the floods above the sky.

The hymn tune PRAISE JEHOVAH was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1899. We enjoyed putting together a recording of this hymn, also known to us as “Doesn’t this sound a bit like I’ve Been Working on the Railroad?”

Somebody Loves Me – Handbells, 5-7 Octaves

Somebody Loves Me is a George Gershwin classic, with lyrics by Ballard McDonald and Buddy DeSylva. It was published in time for the 1924 edition of The George White Scandals, a series of revues that ran from 1919 to 1936.

There are some handbell arrangements that are absolutely perfect for sight-reading! We discovered this is not one of them. It’s a Level 5 piece, with lots of chromatic stuff and interesting challenges. After we’d played it, we thought of several ways we could have made our job easier – perhaps with a couple of duplicate bells, layout changes etc. Still, we had fun, and it came out not-too-badly for an unrehearsed piece. Our original plan had been to record it for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, but once we’d looked at it, we didn’t want to wait any longer – so here it is!

The Lord is My Shepherd – Handbells, 4-5 Octaves

The Lord is My Shepherd is an arrangement that Larry wrote in 2008, for Caroline Harnly, in honor of her mother. Caroline was, until recently, the long-term director of the San Francisco State University Handbell Choir. The hymn tune POLAND is an unusual one; it was written by Koschat in 1862.

“The Lord is my shepherd, no want shall I know,
I walk in green pastures, safe-folded I rest,
He leadeth my soul where the still waters flow,
Restores me when wand’ring, redeems when oppressed,
Restores me when wand’ring, redeems when oppressed.”

We enjoyed the opportunity to make a video of this 5-octave arrangement!

Sunrise – a Hymn Tune for 3 or 5 Octave Handbells

The hymn tune SUNRISE was first published in the 1768 Supplementum to the Luxembourg Kyriale. In more recent times, it has been used as the tune for William Bright’s hymn At Thy Feet, O Christ We Lay. In 1978, John Richards also used it for his hymn Spirit, Working in Creation. Here’s our arrangement for 3 or 5 octaves of handbells, also referred to in our house as “that peck-peck tune”, because of the treble thumb-damps!

More information about Sunrise (Kyriale)

SUNRISE is arranged for 3 or 5 octaves of handbells, with 2 octaves of (optional) handchimes. It’s a Level 2+ arrangement. If you’d like to play this piece, the sheet music is available to download from Choraegus.

My Faith Has Found a Resting Place – Handbells, 3 or 5 Octaves

“My faith has found a resting place, not in device or creed;
I trust the ever-living One, His wounds for me shall plead.
I need no other argument, I need no other plea;
it is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me.”

My Faith Has Found a Resting Place is a hymn first published in 1891. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt wrote the lyrics, under her pen name, Lidie H. Edmunds. The beautiful tune is the Norwegian folk melody Landås, attributed to Andre Ernest Modeste Gretry and arranged for this hymn by William James Kirkpatrick.

Procession and Celebration – for Handbells, 5-7 Octaves

Procession and Celebration is an original composition, commissioned by the Tate family in honor of Shosh Meyer, handbell director at St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Beaverton, Oregon. Shosh has been a friend of ours for some years, and played handbells at our wedding in 2012!

Larry and Carla wedding, Shosh

We decided it was time for another 5-octave recording project…. and this one was a fun challenge for us! As with all these “put together in iMovie” videos, we didn’t rehearse this piece beforehand. We didn’t feel entirely confident about playing the whole piece from start to finish, so we started with Procession. We recorded all the parts for that, and then played Celebration. You’ll see the join in the middle of the video. This piece is the most challenging one we’ve attempted with five octaves (so far), and it felt like a daunting task before we started. But we were pleased with how it turned out, and we were surprised how much we enjoyed playing it, particularly those fast runs in Celebration!

It’s always interesting how every square of video is a different color; we think of it as “50 Shades of Our Basement”. The whole piece was recorded in just a few hours, and it’s fun to see how the light changes in a relatively short space of time! Once again, Carla enjoyed the opportunity to play those bass bells. A highlight was when we got the lowest part recorded correctly on the first attempt!

More information about the music

Procession and Celebration is for 5-7 octaves of handbells, with optional 2-octave handchimes. If you don’t have the chimes, you could play those notes with bells instead. It’s a Level 5 arrangement; fun for an advanced-level handbell choir, but also an interesting and achievable challenge for an aspiring-to-bronze choir. If you’d like to play this original composition, the sheet music is available to download from Choraegus.
