Jesus, Lover of my Soul – for Handbells, 3-5 Octaves

“Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high;
hide me, O my Savior, hide,
till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last!“

Jesus, Lover of my Soul is a hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1740. The lyrics are sung to several different melodies, including Joseph Parry’s ABERYSTWYTH. Our arrangement is for 3-5 octaves of handbells, and it’s Level 3. Larry wrote it a couple of years ago, and the Carillon Choir at Third Reformed Church (here in Holland) played it for the first time in November 2019. We only managed to get a short excerpt video at the time (as we were subbing in the choir) – so we thought it would be a good idea to make our own demo video!

Away in a Manger – for 6 Handbells and Piano

“Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head;
the stars in the heavens looked down where He lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.“

We’ve enjoyed putting together some handbell music that needs only 6 bells, a piano and an optional sling! Here’s an arrangement of the gentle Away in a Manger carol. It’s the CRADLE SONG melody, which is the standard tune used in the UK, rather than the MURRAY tune more familiar to people in the USA.

Please be reassured that Larry put the sling on especially for this video. He’s recovered well from his shoulder surgery, and doesn’t need the sling any more. Whenever we post a 6-bell video, we always receive concerned messages asking what injury Larry has suffered… but honestly, the sling is just to keep his right arm occupied while there aren’t enough bells to need both hands. We refer to it these days as a “concert sling”.

Of course, the alternative would be for Carla to give up one of her bells, so that we’d have three each. But have you ever tried asking anyone to give up a bell?

This piece is arranged for just 6 handbells, with piano accompaniment. It’s suitable for 2-3 ringers to play, with no requirement to divide the bells in the same way we did. You can play it with just two bells each, or split between two ringers with three bells each. It’s a gentle melody, and one of our more straightforward 6-bell arrangements.

Jesus, Good Above All Other – for Handbells, 2-3 Octaves

“Jesus, good above all other,
gentle child of gentle mother,
in a stable born our brother,
give us grace to persevere.

Jesus, cradled in a manger,
for us facing every danger,
living as a homeless stranger,
make we thee our King most dear.”

We were recently going through some old memory cards from our video camera, and we found a forgotten-about recording we’d made of this gentle hymn. The tune is QUEM PASTORES – a 15th century tune, sometimes shortened to Quempas, also used for Christmas to describe the shepherds and their journey to Bethlehem. In more recent years, the melody has also been used for the hymn Like a Mighty River Flowing – so it’s a very versatile tune!

Here’s the recording we made, many months ago. It’s a little unpolished, since it was one of our first attempts at playing full-choir music with just the two of us. Still, you should get a reasonable idea of how the piece sounds:

Jesus, Good Above All Other is for 2-3 octaves of handbells. The handchimes add something extra, but if you don’t have handchimes, the notes can all be played on handbells with no problem. It’s a Level 2+ arrangement, in 6/8 – and it’s one of our most straightforward full-choir arrangements. Lead On, O King Eternal – 16-Bell Music

Lead On, O King Eternal is also sung as The Day of Resurrection. With Easter fast approaching, this seems like a good time to introduce our newest arrangement for sixteen handbells.

The “Kinky Turtle” hymn!

This hymn, affectionately known as Lead On, O Kinky Turtle, is sung to the LANCASHIRE hymn tune, written by Ernest Shurtleff in 1887. Our arrangement contains no bell changes, and needs no bell-sharing. It’s suitable for up to 8 ringers to play, and doesn’t need any tables or foam. This makes it perfect for your socially-distanced worship service!

Free Handbell Music – The Spider Song – for 8 Bells

Here’s some free handbell music, as a thank you to everyone who’s purchased music from Choraegus this summer. It’s been a strange season for us, and for many other handbell musicians, as so many spring and summer performances were cancelled, and the upcoming fall/Christmas season still feels a little uncertain. We’ve been thankful that we have bells at home and plenty of music to play.

We’ve also been enjoying spending time at our Victorian summer cottage in northern Michigan, where we can play handbell duets on the porch, to the sound of cars and trucks thundering past on US-31. The residents in 1887 never had to worry about traffic noise!

Yay! Free music!

This week we have another free 8-bell arrangement to offer you. Whether you call it Incy Wincy Spider or Itsy Bitsy Spider, you should recognise this early 20th-century children’s song. You can find our arrangement in the Freebies section of our music site. You’ll also find free music for Happy Birthday, Auld Lang Syne, Dona Nobis Pacem, and Alouette. In addition, there are printable covers for anyone who’s storing their 8-bell music in binders.

There’s no obligation to make any other purchase from Choraegus to get the free handbell music. Of course, we hope you’ll take a look at other titles we have to offer, but if you’d rather just grab the free music and go, we don’t mind at all. It’s a good way to try our eight-bell music without having to spend any money! New Accompanied 6-Bell Music – Al die Willen te Kaap’ren Varen

We’ve been having fun discovering how much music can be made with just six handbells (with piano accompaniment and an optional sling). Our most recent arrangements have been hymns or Christmas music, but here’s something a bit different. It’s an arrangement of the traditional song Al die Willen te Kaap’ren Varen. We know it as the “Dutch Pirate Song”!

People often as us about handbell duets for Halloween, and we always seem to be stuck without an answer. This arrangement could definitely work!

New Handbell Music – Be Thou My Vision – for 8 Bells and Piano

Our 8-bell arrangement of Be Thou My Vision was commissioned earlier this summer for the Jubilate Ringers at St Anne’s Episcopal Church in Damascus, Maryland. The Irish hymn tune SLANE is also the setting for the popular hymn Lord of All Hopefulness. We enjoyed making the demonstration video of this accompanied arrangement; it’s the first 8-bell duet we’ve played since Larry had his shoulder surgery in May!

New Handbell Music for 8 Bells – Christ, the Life of All the Living

“Christ, the life of all the living,

Here’s another hymn arrangement that uses only eight handbells. It’s the 19th-century tune Christ, the Life of All the Living. This demonstration video was another of the videos we rushed to record before Larry had his shoulder surgery – with apologies for the back-lighting. We were running out of time, and had no idea when Larry would be recovered enough to play eight-bell music again! This one could also work well for a socially-distant trio or quartet.

Larry’s Been Writing More Handbell Music!

In the last few weeks since his prostate cancer surgery, Larry hasn’t been sitting around idly doing nothing; well, not all the time, anyway. He’s been writing more handbell music!

He managed to sprain his ankle during a brief walk outside on an icy day, which didn’t do much to speed up his recovery. For that reason, we’ve been been getting through more seasons of Netflix shows than at any time in our history. Still, Larry has also been attending physical therapy sessions and doing as much exercise as his ankle will allow. In a few days’ time he’ll be going to his six-week post-surgery appointment. We hope the current restrictions on lifting (as in, certain handbells) will be removed. That would mean we could get back to some kind of a rehearsal schedule for our duets!

What’s Larry been writing?

Anyway, Larry’s not the kind of person who wants to spend lots of time in front of the TV, so he’s also been working on some new handbell music. There are a couple of new eight-bell arrangements, which we’ll be hoping to record and publish in the coming weeks, as well as several original compositions for full handbell choir. Handbell arrangements from the Living Water Project

Between 1989 and 2003, Larry directed a choir in California, and from there came the Living Water Composition Project. Larry’s recent exciting project has been to look back at some of these original choral songs and find some that might be reworked as handbell pieces! So far, we have the following new titles:

Home at Last
The first of the LWCP pieces to be arranged for handbells, this is a Level 4+ piece for 5-8 octaves.

Emmaus
This is the handbell/handchime version of the Living Water song about Jesus meeting two disciples on the Emmaus road. It’s a Level 4 arrangement for 5-7 octaves of bells and 3 octaves of handchimes.

You Must Trust
This is a minor-key jazz piece that’s going to be fun to play! It’s Level 4, arranged for 5-7 octaves of handbells with percussion.

New hymn arrangements for handbells

Several hymn arrangements have been published in the last couple of weeks, with more to follow soon:

Jesus Shall Reign
This new arrangement of the popular hymn has some different touches that will challenge your ringers. It’s Level 4, for 5-7 octaves of handbells.

Come Down, O Love Divine
This beautiful hymn tune (DOWN AMPNEY) was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This new arrangement is Level 3-, scored for 3 or 5 octaves of handbells and 3 octaves of handchimes.

The Lord is My Shepherd
This is an arrangement of the hymn tune POLAND. It was commissioned by our friend Caroline Harnly in honor of her mother. Caroline directs the San Francisco State University Handbell Choir. It’s a Level 3 arrangement for 4-5 octaves of handbells and 2 octaves of handchimes.

Give Me Jesus
This new 12-bell arrangement is available in two versions; one for bells from C5 to G6 and the other for F5 to C7.

And now for something completely different…

Yes, We Have No Bananas
For the adventurous bucket-slingers among you, this is a Low Ding Zone arrangement of the popular song by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn. It’s arranged for 7 less-than-sane bass ringers. This piece was originally written in 1923, so it entered the public domain this year, and we can now offer it for sale! You’ll need bells from G2 to D5, and chimes from Bb2 to C5, plus a shaker or other rhythm toy.
