Music for Twelve Bells – a Whole New Adventure!

Over the past couple of years, we’ve had a lot of fun writing and performing our eight-bell music. We’ve recently published some fun and exciting music for twelve bells – a whole new adventure for us!

Getting some help with playing the new music

We wanted to make demonstration videos of the new 12-bell pieces. Of course, the problem with 12-bell music is that we can’t play it by ourselves. So we thought for a while, and decided to ask someone to help us:

“Hi, J.C. Are you free on Saturday? Want to come and help us with some bell stuff?”

“Okay. Uh… what kind of bell stuff?”

“Well, we need to try and record as many of the new twelve-bell pieces as we can manage… in not-very-much time.”

J.C. is more of a bass bell expert, and he doesn’t get a lot of opportunity to do 4-in-hand treble ringing, so we weren’t sure if he’d be too enthusiastic about our suggestion. But he’s a skilled musician, and he was up for the challenge. We met at the rehearsal venue, and the three of us spent an hour or so playing through our new twelve-bell music, to see how it worked “in real life”. We recorded our rehearsal, in the hope that we’d be able to get some demonstration videos for the website.

The videos we made are below. It should be noted that these are all first, second or third takes, so the pieces are not necessarily played 100% accurately. There are occasional wrong notes, and some inaccurate rhythms and occasional slip-ups of a random nature! But for a first read-through, we were quite pleased with how it all went. We felt that we’d only need a few more practice sessions to add a bit more polish to each performance.

Here are the rehearsal videos. Click on the titles if you’d like to buy the music!

Photos and Videos from the 34th Annual SECC Handbell Festival

The SECC Handbell Festival was a great success. More than a hundred skilled young handbell musicians attended, and worked very hard to prepare for the concert. Larry had the privilege of being their clinician for the event.

We were both so impressed by the skill and dedication of the young musicians at this event. The choirs arrived well-prepared, and stayed focused throughout the rehearsals. Their individual performances were of a very high standard, and they performed the massed ringing pieces very well. If you’d like to see some of the highlights from the SECC Handbell Festival, here’s a video with excerpts from the rehearsals and the evening concert. The concert featured music by Arnold Sherman, Kevin McChesney, William Gross, Jason Krug, Linda McKechnie, Tim Waugh, Michael Glasgow, Catherine McMichael, Matthew Compton and our very own Larry Sue. A snippet from our performance of our eight-bell duet “Great is Thy Faithfulness” appears about 18 minutes into the video.

We also very much enjoyed this performance of Matthew Compton’s arrangement of “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?”, by Bellissimo, a group from Redlands Advent Academy. Here’s a video from the event:

If you’d like to see more photos from this event, you can find them on our Facebook page!

Southeastern Conference Advanced Handbell Festival

We’re excited that Larry has been invited to be the clinician at the SECC Advanced Handbell Festival this year!

We’re looking forward to making a trip to Riverside for this one-day event. Larry will be leading rehearsals with advanced young handbell musicians, and preparing for an evening concert. The handbell choirs will work on massed-ringing pieces to perform as a group, and will also prepare individual performance pieces. We’ll be playing an 8-bell duet or two during the concert too!

We’re looking forward to our visit to Riverside, and hope to do some sightseeing after the Advanced Handbell Festival. We’re also making tentative plans to play handbell duets in a church service on the Sunday morning. We’ll give you more details about this as they become available. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates!

If you’re in the area, you might like to join us on Friday, March 13, for the evening concert at La Sierra University’s Alumni Pavilion. There should be some exciting music to listen to, performed by some of the area’s finest young handbell musicians. Find out more information from the SECC Office of information, or contact us if you have any questions we might be able to help with.

We Don’t Always Play Handbells. Oh, Wait. Actually We Do

We don’t always play handbells. Hmm. Maybe we do. It might even be an addiction. What do you think?

we dont always play handbells - meme

Do you play handbells too? Would you like to play more?

If you want to spend more time playing handbells, check our our music site, Choraegus. You’ll find lots of handbell scores to keep you busy! Maybe try something new – a solo piece, or something for bass bells. Alternatively, grab an enthusiastic partner and try a 6- or 8-bell duet! Listen to lots of demonstration videos, and find out more about what’s available from our music site. Improve your bass-ringing skills with The Bass Ringer’s Notebook; the ultimate guide to swinging the buckets.

Do you actually NOT play handbells?

If you don’t play handbells, but you appreciate handbell music, there are still ways to get involved. YouTube is full of handbell videos to watch, from choirs all over the world. Another thing you could consider is booking a handbell choir (or a handbell duo) to play at your event. Host a concert, invite us to your worship service, have handbell music at a wedding ceremony or holiday event – there are so many options! Contact us, and let’s talk more about how we can bring our music to where you are.

Thank You to Everyone Who Came to the Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert

A huge “thank you” to everyone who came to the Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert in Menlo Park last Friday! We had a great evening, and very much enjoyed the opportunity to hear Angela Kraft Cross on the organ. Dr Kraft Cross has given over four hundred concerts across the United States. She has also performed in Canada, England, Holland, France, Hungary, Lesotho and Guam. To say she’s an experienced performer would be an understatement!

It was encouraging to have such a large audience in the church on Friday evening. These benefit concerts are a wonderful way to support the valuable work of the Alzheimer’s Association. We’re grateful to T. Paul Rosas, organist at Los Altos United Methodist Church, for inviting us to be a part of this fundraising effort.

Here’s a picture of us in the church before the concert, with Angela Kraft Cross.

concert in Menlo Park - handbells and organ

Over the next few days we’ll be posting more photos and video excerpts from the concert in Menlo Park. You’ll be able to see them here on our website, and on Facebook and YouTube. If you couldn’t attend the concert, it’s not too late to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. Contact us to find out how, and we’ll put you in touch with the concert organiser. Alternatively, you might enjoy taking part in a local Walk for Alzheimer’s event near you!

We’re looking forward to the next Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert. We’ll let you know when it will be happening!

Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert on January 23rd!

Don’t miss the Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert on Friday, January 23rd!

If you love handbells… or if you love organ music… or if you know someone with Alzheimer’s Disease… these are all great reasons to come to this concert. In fact, who needs a reason to go to a concert? Even if you have no particular reason to leave your house on that Friday evening, we’d still love to see you at St Bede’s Episcopal Church in Menlo Park.

We’ll be teaming up with talented organist Angela Kraft Cross to present a varied selection of music. You’ll hear handbell pieces ranging from classical arrangements to hymns and Irish jigs. This Alzheimer’s Benefit Concert is sponsored by the San Jose and PA/Peninsula chapters of the American Guild of Organists. Admission is free, and there will be a free-will offering to support the work of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Upcoming Performances in the San Francisco Bay Area

We have a busy few days ahead of us with upcoming performances across the Bay Area. If you haven’t yet managed to hear our Christmas handbell duets, you have four chances to see us this week!

Fundraising for the Salvation Army

This coming Thursday, December 11th, we’ll be fundraising at the Salvation Army Red Kettle. We’ll be playing Christmas carols and holiday music at Nob Hill Foods in Mountain View. Drop by and help the Salvation Army provide food, shelter and social services to those in need throughout the year.

San Jose Festival of Carols

On Friday evening, December 12th, we’ll be in San Jose, at the Festival of Carols. The Festival of Carols is at Foothill Presbyterian Church, 5301 McKee Road, San Jose, CA 95127, and starts at 7:00pm. This is an annual musical celebration that features performances by the Foothill musical ensembles. Other professional, semi-professional and amateur artists from the community will also perform at the event. The evening ends with a post-concert reception in the Fellowship Hall. There’s no admission charge. However, donations such as non-perishable food items, coats, jackets, and toys are appreciated, and benefit many local organisations.

Upcoming performances at the weekend

Saturday, December 13th, is a busy day for us. We’ll be at the annual German Holiday Market (Weinachtsmarkt) in Mountain View. The event takes place between 11:00am and 9:00pm at the plaza of the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. There will be German food and drinks, and handcrafted gifts from Germany and crafts by local artists. Students of the German International School of Silicon Valley will perform, and there will be an ice rink!  The event offers an opportunity to explore the famous tradition of German Holiday Markets right here in Silicon Valley. All proceeds will benefit GISSV’s high-quality bilingual programs.

We’ll be performing between 11:00am and 11:30am, and again between 12:45pm and 1:00pm.

The Sundar Shadi Holiday Display

After the German Holiday Market, we’ll drive to El Cerrito for the opening night of the Sundar Shadi Holiday Display.  This display is an unmissable holiday tradition. It’s on Moeser Lane, east of San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito. The display was first created in 1949, as a gift to the community from an El Cerrito resident, Sundar Shadi. Shadi passed away in 2002 at the age of 101. However, the display he constructed on the hillside next to his El Cerrito home each year continues today. There’s a team of devoted volunteers who care for his creations and ensure they’re on display for the holidays.

The display in the hills of El Cerrito will be lit nightly from December 13th to 26th. The display features shepherds, camels, donkeys and sheep, villagers and the town of Bethlehem. It’s just as Shadi envisioned it would have appeared on the eve of Christ’s birth.  We’re making it part of our holiday tradition. Why not make it part of yours?  We’ll be playing Christmas carols from 6:00pm (weather permitting!) on the opening night.

The Kara Annual Service of Remembrance

Last night we played our handbell duets at the Kara Annual Service of Remembrance.

Kara is based here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s an organization that provides grief support for children, teens, families and adults who have lost someone close to them. Kara also helps families dealing with terminal illness.

The annual candlelight service is a meaningful event where members of the community gather to light candles of memory, hope, courage and love. There’s live music, memories, laughter, tears, and a lot of support and genuine caring. After the service, there’s a reception, where people can gather to chat and share their stories with others in the community.

Annual Service of Remembrance - Kara

This is the third year we’ve taken part in the Kara Annual Service of Remembrance. We always find it a moving and humbling experience to share our music in an atmosphere of such love and support. There is grief too, of course, but so much courage and caring.

Handbell music seems to fit very well in remembrance services. People find comfort in hearing well-known hymns such as Amazing Grace, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing and Just As I Am. We’ve also played secular songs like Ma Navu and Moreton Bay – to soothe the soul and help to bring peace.

Our thanks go to all at Kara for inviting us to be part of this meaningful event.

The Nutcracker, at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts

We’ll be spending the coming weekend at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. We’ll be playing handbell duets in the lobby before the Pacific Ballet Academy’s performances of The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker - handbell duo

This wonderful ballet performance is always one of the highlights of the holiday season here in Mountain View. It’s an annual tradition for the Pacific Ballet Academy, and we look forward to it every year. We’ll be playing a selection of popular handbell pieces before each of the six performances. You’ll hear our 8-bell Nutcracker duets, as well as many traditional Christmas and holiday carols, all played with just eight bells, in the 4-in-hand style.

This year is the 24th year of these Pacific Ballet Academy performances. There will be two shows each day – at 1:00pm and 6:00pm on Friday, November 28th and Saturday November 29th. Performances on Sunday, November 30th will be at 12:30pm and 4:00pm. Come early to gather with other guests before the shows, and listen to the sweet sound of handbell music to get us all in the mood for this exciting annual holiday tradition!

The Nutcracker - Mountain View

The Pacific Ballet Academy students have been working hard to make this another great season of Nutcracker shows. We hope to see you at one of the performances!
