The Strife is O’er – for 6 Handbells and Piano

“The strife is o’er, the battle done;
the victory of life is won;
the song of triumph has begun.
Alleluia!“

The Strife is O’er is a popular Easter hymn, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. Our arrangement of the VICTORY tune needs just six handbells with piano accompaniment.

Please don’t worry about Larry’s arm being in a sling; he’s not injured. The sling is the one he had for his shoulder surgery a couple of years ago, and he’s wearing it only for the video. What else would he do with his right arm otherwise?

This arrangement is suitable for 2-3 ringers. There are no techniques that need tables or foam, and no bell-sharing between ringers – so if you’re still observing social distancing, this piece could work well. Level 1 Handbell Music – Newness

We had a request for some Level 1 handbell music – so here’s an update to our recent post about Newness.

Newness is an original composition for 3 or 5 octaves of handbells. It’s turning out to be a versatile piece! If you play it without the handchimes, it’s around Level 2 in difficulty. It’s fairly straightforward, but with a running 8th note/quaver line. If you add the optional handchime part, the challenge level is taken up a notch for several of the bell assignments. Here it is, played in full – the 5-octave version:

By request, Newness is now available in a simplified, Level 1, version! The 8th note/quaver runs are gone, and the whole piece has nothing smaller than quarter notes/crotchets to deal with. We didn’t make another video for this version, but the audio track is below for you to listen to. As it’s an original composition, there’s also no problem if your handbell choir needs to play it more slowly than we did.

We’ll be looking to see if we can get some more Level 1 handbell music arranged for 3-5 octave handbell choirs. Sing We Now of Christmas – Handbells, 3-5 Octaves

Sing We Now of Christmas was a fun recording project for us! This arrangement of the NOËL NOUVELET hymn tune was written for the Carillon Choir at Third Reformed Church of Holland, and they played it for a Christmas Eve service. We decided to put together a recording of our own!

The useful thing about Sing We Now of Christmas is that, with a quick change of title (and maybe no red accessories), it can become Now the Green Blade Riseth. Two playing opportunities for the price of one, and perfect for a spring or Easter worship service.

For the Beauty of the Earth – for Handbells, 3-5 Octaves

For the Beauty of the Earth is one of Larry’s arrangements for 3-5 octaves, plus 2 octaves of handchimes (optional). It seemed like a fun challenge to make a recording with just the two of us.

We didn’t rehearse this piece beforehand, and recorded most of the parts in just one take (with a couple of exceptions). There were a couple of slip-ups with the tempo changes (some things probably do need to be planned and practised beforehand!) but all in all, we were fairly happy with the way it turned out.

The biggest challenge was recording the video too late in the afternoon. By the time we were attempting the upper assignments, the sun was getting low enough in the sky to start hitting us fairly hard through the windows! Still, this is always a learning experience, and next time we’ll begin recording earlier in the day.

This Joyful Eastertide – New 8-Bell Music from Choraegus

The latest 8-bell arrangement from Choraegus is This Joyful Eastertide. This carol was written by George Ratcliffe Woodward, and published in 1894 in Carols for Easter and Ascensiontide. The melody is a Dutch tune from 1624.

We recorded our demonstration video in early 2020, and decided it wasn’t everything we’d hoped for. We made some vague plans to re-record the arrangement… and promptly forgot about it. An entire year has gone by, and someone recently asked us if we had an 8-bell arrangement of this hymn… so we decided it was time to make the piece available. We never did manage to make a new video, though!

This arrangement has no bell-sharing, no picking-up of accidentals during the piece, and no need for tables. We demonstrate it as a 4-in-hand duet, but there are no special techniques written into the score, so it could also be suitable for a trio or quartet to play.

Lead On, O King Eternal – 16-Bell Music

Lead On, O King Eternal is also sung as The Day of Resurrection. With Easter fast approaching, this seems like a good time to introduce our newest arrangement for sixteen handbells.

The “Kinky Turtle” hymn!

This hymn, affectionately known as Lead On, O Kinky Turtle, is sung to the LANCASHIRE hymn tune, written by Ernest Shurtleff in 1887. Our arrangement contains no bell changes, and needs no bell-sharing. It’s suitable for up to 8 ringers to play, and doesn’t need any tables or foam. This makes it perfect for your socially-distanced worship service!

Lift High the Cross (CRUCIFER) – for Handbells and Piano

Lift High the Cross is a 19th century English hymn. The tune used here is CRUCIFER, written in 1916 by Sydney H. Nicholson. It’s a popular hymn for Holy Week and Easter, and our new 8-bell arrangement is straightforward and fun to play.

People sometimes ask us how they can use 8-bell music when they have more than 4 ringers in their handbell choir. We suggest that if handchimes are available, the piece could be doubled on bells and chimes! We decided to demonstrate this in our latest video:

Played like this, doubled on handbells and handchimes, up to 8 ringers could be kept busy with just 2 bells or chimes each. Of course, if you only have 2-4 ringers, you won’t need to double anything, and the piece can just be played in the usual way. But this was a fun experiment!
