New 8-Bell Music – Al die Willen te Kaap’ren Varen

Last week we published our fun arrangement of Calliope House, with a demonstration video filmed at our “All the Way from Holland” concert in California in May 2019.

This week we’re pleased to bring you another piece that we performed during our trip to California. We played this one at the lunchtime concert at the Bay Area Spring Ring. It’s the traditional Dutch tune Al die Willen te Kaap’ren Varen, usually known to us as the “Dutch pirate song”. It’s another one of the pieces we enjoy playing during street performances.

If you’d like to play Al die Willen te Kaap’ren Varen, the sheet music is now available to purchase, download and print from Choraegus. Purchasing this arrangement gives you permission to print and maintain up to four copies for your handbell group.

New 8-Bell Music – Calliope House

Calliope House is a fun addition to our 8-bell repertoire. It’s a jig written by Dave Richardson of the Irish band Boys of the Lough. The piece was originally written in honor of George Balderose, the founder of the Pittsburgh Folk Music Society, who used to host house concerts in his home – Calliope House.

This tune is, oddly, more difficult to play than it looks. We usually save it for street performances. Somewhere on Facebook there’s a video entitled The Perils of Street Performing. The video shows us playing this piece on a ridiculously-windy day in Downtown Holland.

Anyway, we brought the piece out for this slightly jet-lagged performance at our All the Way from Holland concert in the California Bay Area in May 2019. The third page has a tendency to trip us up when we haven’t quite had enough sleep, and this performance was no exception. Still, we always enjoy playing it, and we love a challenge, of course.

New Handbell Music – To the Hills I Lift Mine Eyes

“To the hills I lift my eyes;
whence shall help for me arise?
From the Lord shall come my aid,
who the heav’n and earth has made.
He will guide through dangers all,
will not suffer thee to fall.
He who safe his people keeps,
slumbers not and never sleeps.”

Here’s another hymn arrangement that uses only eight handbells. It’s the 19th-century tune To the Hills I Lift Mine Eyes, also sung as Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide. This demonstration video was one of the last videos we rushed to record before Larry had his shoulder surgery. We need a little more rehearsal time, but you’ll get the idea.

The beginning and end sections of this arrangement are straightforward to play, with a little more challenge added in the middle section.

New 8-Bell Music from Choraegus – I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

Thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music during this time of social distancing. Our latest 8-bell arrangement is the hymn I Want Jesus to Walk With Me. We recorded our demo video in March, before Larry had his shoulder surgery… and wow, doesn’t it look cold outside those windows? Now that summer has arrived in Michigan, we’re used to seeing the trees much less bare-looking!

This African-American spiritual is a song of lament, but also an assurance that Jesus walks beside anyone who’s suffering. It’s often heard during Lent and Holy Week, but can be used year-round in worship services.

I want Jesus to walk with me,
I want Jesus to walk with me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my trial, Lord, walk with me,
In my trials, Lord, walk with me,
When the shades of life are falling,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my troubles, Lord walk with me,
In my troubles, Lord walk with me,
When my life becomes a burden,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me
.”

New Handbell Music – He Leadeth Me – for 8 Bells

We’ve had to take a break from playing our eight-bell music while Larry recovers from his recent shoulder surgery. We’ve actually been surprised at our much we’ve missed our rehearsals! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is the hymn He Leadeth Me. This hymn was written by Joseph Gilmore, based on the text of Psalm 23, with music by William Bradbury.

“He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

This hymn remains popular today, and is often sung at remembrance and memorial services, and on Good Shepherd Sunday.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and FREE Handbell Music

Continued thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music in this time of lockdowns and social distancing! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is When Johnny Comes Marching Home. If you’re planning a socially-distant Flag Day or Fourth of July celebration, this arrangement could be a good choice!

Making this demonstration video was an interesting experience for us, because it was the last piece we recorded before Larry’s shoulder surgery. Time was running out, and we’d be the first to admit that this arrangement is not necessarily an easy sight-read. We posted a video on our Facebook page a few weeks ago, showing how many tries it took us to get through the introduction!

We got there eventually (just about), and managed to make a demonstration video to give you an idea of how the piece is meant to sound:

If you’d like to play this arrangement, the sheet music is available from Choraegus, our music site.

Free handbell music!

We’ve also added another free download to the Freebies section of our music site: a little 8-bell arrangement of The Ants Go Marching, or The Animals Went in Two By Two. This one is easier than When Johnny Comes Marching Home, although the tune is the same. If you need something less challenging, you could start with that. You could even call it When Johnny Comes Marching Home when you perform it!

New Handbell Music – How Firm a Foundation

Our continued thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music. We appreciate you all so much! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is the hymn How Firm a Foundation. This hymn was published in 1787 and has remained popular through the centuries. The words remind us that no matter what we’re going through, God is with us, and we can rely on the solid foundation of His strength and support.

“Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”

If you’d like to play How Firm a Foundation, the sheet music is available to purchase, download and print from Choraegus, our music site.

New Handbell Music – I Stand Amazed – for 8 Bells

“I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus the Nazarene,
and wonder how he could love me,
a sinner, condemned unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful!
and my song shall ever be;
How marvelous! How wonderful!
is my Savior’s love to me!”

Thank you to everyone who’s been playing our 8-bell music during this time of social distancing. We’ve enjoyed seeing some of your videos! Here’s our most recent 8-bell arrangement – the hymn I Stand Amazed. This one was a fun and not-too-difficult sight-read; you could slow it down a little if you chose to, and it would still work.

FREE Handbell Music – Alouette – for 8 Bells

While we’ve been under Michigan’s “stay home” order, we’ve enjoyed working on lots of new music to be published on Choraegus. We’ve been disappointed not to be able to give any performances this spring, but thankful that we have bells at home and plenty of music to play! Our most recent piece is a fun little arrangement of the traditional French tune Alouette – for 8 bells.

You can get the sheet music completely free!

We’re pleased to offer Alouette – for 8 bells – for free, as a thank-you to everyone who’s been playing our music during this time of social distancing. You can find it in the Freebies section of our music site, where there’s also free music for Happy Birthday, Auld Lang Syne and Dona Nobis Pacem. If you need them, there are also printable covers for anyone storing their 8-bell music in binders.

There’s no obligation to make any other purchase from Choraegus to get the free handbell music. Of course, we hope you’ll take a look at other titles we have to offer, but if you’d rather just grab the free music and go, we don’t mind at all. It’s a good way to try our 8-bell music without having to spend any money! Alouette could be a good piece for practising 4-in-hand as a duet, but could also be played by a (socially-distant?) quartet group.

How to get the music

To get your free sheet music, add it to your cart on the Choraegus site. Next, click on the yellow “Check out with PayPal” button (don’t worry; PayPal won’t ask you to make any payment).
