Larry and Carla Sue are West Michigan’s smallest handbell choir! They both started playing handbells in 1987 – Larry in California, and Carla in England.
Larry and Carla met online in 2008, on a website for handbell musicians. Carla moved to the USA in 2012, where they were married and started performing handbell duets together. Over the years, they’ve built up a wide repertoire of pieces arranged for just eight bells. They have performed together and taught in California, Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York City, New Jersey, Nebraska, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. They arrange all their own handbell duets, and they aim to demonstrate that handbell performances are not only beautiful to listen to, but can also be graceful and interesting to watch.
Larry and Carla run their own handbell music publishing company, Choraegus, where they publish handbell music ranging from pieces that use only 6 bells, all the way up to music for choirs with 5-8 octaves. They are available to teach handbell techniques, and play duets for concerts, worship and memorial services, wedding ceremonies, parties, and Christmas and holiday events. In their spare time, they enjoy taking long walks and road-trips, doing jigsaw puzzles, and not-collecting chickens. Larry and Carla are a married couple, brought together by their shared passion for handbells. They play duets by holding two bells in each hand, and aim to demonstrate that handbells are not just beautiful to hear, but a visual art as well.
