Celebration – Easy Handbell Music!

Looking for easy handbell music? Admittedly, Larry does have a bit of a reputation for writing challenging music. However, just occasionally, he likes to write something suitable for a beginning handbell choir, or a group in need of something to play that’s not going to take too much time to learn. Celebration is one of those pieces.

Larry wrote this piece some years ago for the handbell choir at Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California. It has straightforward rhythm and lots of chords – ideal for building confidence in newer ringers, or for groups getting back together after a period of absence. Here’s our new demonstration video, recorded with just the two of us:

This is another arrangement that needs no bell-sharing between ringers. If your handbell choir is observing social distancing, and playing from spaced-apart tables, this piece could work well!

Sandmännchen – New 8-Bell Music from Choraegus

Sandmännchen, also known as Die Blümelein sie schlafen, was written by Johannes Brahms. Its title translates as The Little Sandman.

Our demonstration video is another one that we recorded early last year. Larry was due to have his shoulder surgery, so we spent some time recording as many of our new 8-bell pieces as we could. This was one of the last recordings we made before Larry’s arm went into a sling and he started writing music for just 6 bells!

This arrangement has no bell-sharing, no picking-up of accidentals during the piece, and no need for tables. We demonstrate it as a 4-in-hand duet, but there are no special techniques written into the score, so it could also be suitable for a trio or quartet to play.

Sandmännchen - handbells

Newness – for Handbells, 3 or 5 Octaves

Now that we have more time together at home, we decided to try recording another full-choir piece with just the two of us. We decided on Newness – one of Larry’s original compositions – as our second recording project. We didn’t have 5 octaves of handbells at home, so we played the 3-octave version.

As with All Praise to Thee, for Thou, O King Divine, this was a read-through, rather than a practised performance. It’s pretty much all there, but we didn’t practise beforehand, and didn’t work on expression or dynamics. Still, you should get a reasonable idea of how the piece is meant to sound.

This is another arrangement that needs no bell-sharing between ringers. If your handbell choir is observing social distancing, and playing from spaced-apart tables, this piece could work well!

To God Be the Glory is one of our favorite pieces to play as an 8-bell duet. We recently decided the time was right for a new 12-bell arrangement! Here’s our “cloned” demonstration video:

As with all Choraegus 12-bell arrangements, this piece has no bell-sharing, and there are no accidentals to pick up mid-piece. There are no techniquest that need tables or foam, so the arrangement can be played from music stands. The music is suitable for 3-6 ringers, and two versions are available – either using bells C5-G6 (as in our demo video), or using F5-C7.

16-Bell Music – Holy, Holy, Holy – Played as a Duet

16-bell music has been a fairly recent recording project for us. It’s been an exciting challenge to put together some new demonstration videos.

Holy, Holy, Holy is our latest arrangement for sixteen handbells. We enjoyed recording this piece as a duet project, and we love how pretty the snow looks in the background!

This arrangement is straightforward to play, and contains no bell changes and no accidentals to pick up mid-piece. There are no techniques that require tables, so it’s suitable for a socially-distanced group to play from music stands.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we’ve been thinking about hymns suitable for worship services at this time of year. Our latest 8-bell arrangement, the St Anthony Chorale, is mostly known as a classical piece. It’s perfect for wedding ceremonies, and for use in worship. It’s the setting for the hymn We, Thy People, Praise Thee, with lyrics by Kate Stearn Page.

We recorded our demonstration video of St. Anthony Chorale in October, in our chilly summer cottage near Petoskey. This arrangement is straightforward to play, and has no bell-sharing, no picking-up of accidentals during the piece, and no need for tables, which makes it particularly suitable for a small group of socially-distanced musicians. New Handbell Music – Be Thou My Vision – for 8 Bells and Piano

Our 8-bell arrangement of Be Thou My Vision was commissioned earlier this summer for the Jubilate Ringers at St Anne’s Episcopal Church in Damascus, Maryland. The Irish hymn tune SLANE is also the setting for the popular hymn Lord of All Hopefulness. We enjoyed making the demonstration video of this accompanied arrangement; it’s the first 8-bell duet we’ve played since Larry had his shoulder surgery in May!

New Accompanied 6-Bell Music – Hyfrydol

We used to live in California before we moved to Michigan. We were excited to receive an invitation to teach and/or perform at the recent Handbell Musicians of America Area 12 online conference! We’re officially in Area 5 now, but our Area 12 friends will always hold a special place in our heart.

At the time the invitation arrived, Larry had only just had his shoulder surgery. For that reason, we didn’t feel ready to offer an online class. Instead, we prepared two brand-new 6-bell pieces for the virtual concert at the end of the conference. Hyfrydol is the first of those that we’d like to share with you.

A versatile secular and hymn tune!

Hyfrydol is a much-loved Welsh song, often used as a setting for the hymns Alleluia, Sing to Jesus, Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. Our 6-bell arrangement could be played as a duet, or by a trio of three ringers if you prefer just two bells each. People have said that our six-bell music has been useful for handbell duos where one ringer is more experienced with 4-in-hand technique than the other, but you could just as easily have three bells each. Of course, if one of the ringers is wearing a sling, you have fewer options!

New Handbell Music for 6 Bells – Beach Spring

Continued thanks to everyone who’s been playing Choraegus handbell music during these unusual times of lockdown and social distancing. We appreciate your support and encouragement, particularly as Larry has been recovering from shoulder surgery in recent weeks. We were surprised at how much we missed being able to pick up our bells and play our usual 8-bell duets. Writing and playing music for just 6 bells has been a great alternative for us as Larry heals from surgery. The most recent arrangement we’d like to share with you is Beach Spring.

This versatile hymn tune is used as the setting for Come and Find the Quiet Center, Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing and Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service, and many others!

This arrangement can be played as a duet, or by a trio of three ringers if you prefer just two bells each. Our 6-bell music can be useful for handbell duos where one ringer is more experienced with 4-in-hand technique than the other. We’re keeping the piano accompaniments interesting too, so that your pianist need never feel bored!
