New 8-Bell Music for Worship and Weddings – St. Anthony Chorale

As Thanksgiving approaches, we’ve been thinking about hymns suitable for worship services at this time of year. Our latest 8-bell arrangement, the St Anthony Chorale, is mostly known as a classical piece. It’s perfect for wedding ceremonies, and for use in worship. It’s the setting for the hymn We, Thy People, Praise Thee, with lyrics by Kate Stearn Page.

We recorded our demonstration video of St. Anthony Chorale in October, in our chilly summer cottage near Petoskey. This arrangement is straightforward to play, and has no bell-sharing, no picking-up of accidentals during the piece, and no need for tables, which makes it particularly suitable for a small group of socially-distanced musicians. It could be played by two, three or four ringers.

New Music for 8 Handbells and Piano – For All the Saints

“For all the saints who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!”

By special request, here’s an accompanied 8-bell arrangement of For All the Saints. With the much-loved hymn tune Sine Nomine, written by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1906, this is a popular choice for All Saints’ Day on November 1st. Our demonstration video was recorded at our Victorian summer cottage at Bay View, Petoskey, on a chilly October Sunday, with rain pelting down outside.

As with all our 8-bell arrangements, this piece involves no bell changes, no picking-up of accidentals, and no shared bells. There’s no need for tables, making it suitable for a socially-distanced handbell group, playing from music stands.

Shall We Gather at the River – a New Arrangement for 8 Handbells and Piano

Following on from our popular arrangement of Be Thou My Vision, here’s our latest 8-bell title, Shall We Gather at the River?, arranged for handbells and piano. This beautiful hymn was written in 1864 by Robert Lowry.

“Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.”

This arrangement has no bell changes, and no tables are required. It could work well for playing in a worship service, with ringers playing from music stands, spaced apart to allow for social distancing.

New Handbell Music – Be Thou My Vision – for 8 Bells and Piano

Our 8-bell arrangement of Be Thou My Vision was commissioned earlier this summer for the Jubilate Ringers at St Anne’s Episcopal Church in Damascus, Maryland. The Irish hymn tune SLANE is also the setting for the popular hymn Lord of All Hopefulness. We enjoyed making the demonstration video of this accompanied arrangement; it’s the first 8-bell duet we’ve played since Larry had his shoulder surgery in May!

New Handbell Music – Kingsfold, arranged for 6 Bells and Piano

Kingsfold is one of the pieces we performed in the virtual concert at the recent HMA Area 12 “Handbell Encounters” conference.

Kingsfold is an old English tune, also known as Dives and Lazarus. We use it as the setting for the hymns I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say and When Life Well Lived Is At An End. It’s also the Christmas carol O Sing a Song of Bethlehem. People in folk circles know the song as the Irish ballad The Star of the County Down, and also as My Love Nell. Yes, it’s a very versatile tune!

Our 6-bell arrangement is suitable for 2 or 3 ringers to play. Handbell groups are looking for ways to keep playing, with fewer people and social distancing – and this is one of the ways!

New Accompanied 6-Bell Music – Creator of the Stars of Night

While Larry’s been recovering from shoulder surgery, we’ve enjoyed working on some music that only needs six bells and piano. Our latest 6-bell arrangement is the Advent hymn Creator of the Stars of Night.

This hymn is based on a 7th-century Latin plainchant Conditor alme Siderum. It’s one of the oldest pieces of music in our repertoire! It proved impossible for us to create a December mood for our demonstration recording. However, we can easily imagine this piece being played at an Advent or Christmas Eve service. It would be extra special by candlelight!

New Handbell Music for 6 Bells – Beach Spring

Continued thanks to everyone who’s been playing Choraegus handbell music during these unusual times of lockdown and social distancing. We appreciate your support and encouragement, particularly as Larry has been recovering from shoulder surgery in recent weeks. We were surprised at how much we missed being able to pick up our bells and play our usual 8-bell duets. Writing and playing music for just 6 bells has been a great alternative for us as Larry heals from surgery. The most recent arrangement we’d like to share with you is Beach Spring.

This versatile hymn tune is used as the setting for Come and Find the Quiet Center, Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing and Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service, and many others!

This arrangement can be played as a duet, or by a trio of three ringers if you prefer just two bells each. Our 6-bell music can be useful for handbell duos where one ringer is more experienced with 4-in-hand technique than the other. We’re keeping the piano accompaniments interesting too, so that your pianist need never feel bored!

Thanks to everyone who’s been playing our music during this time of social distancing. Our latest 8-bell arrangement is the hymn I Want Jesus to Walk With Me. We recorded our demo video in March, before Larry had his shoulder surgery… and wow, doesn’t it look cold outside those windows? Now that summer has arrived in Michigan, we’re used to seeing the trees much less bare-looking!

This African-American spiritual is a song of lament, but also an assurance that Jesus walks beside anyone who’s suffering. It’s often heard during Lent and Holy Week, but can be used year-round in worship services.

We’ve had to take a break from playing our eight-bell music while Larry recovers from his recent shoulder surgery. We’ve actually been surprised at our much we’ve missed our rehearsals! Our latest eight-bell arrangement is the hymn He Leadeth Me. This hymn was written by Joseph Gilmore, based on the text of Psalm 23, with music by William Bradbury.

“He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.“

This hymn remains popular today, and is often sung at remembrance and memorial services, and on Good Shepherd Sunday.

Handbell Music for Just 6 Bells – a Whole New Adventure!

Larry’s recent shoulder surgery means that his right arm is going to be in a sling for a while. How can we continue playing handbell duets? The solution is obvious: with handbell music for just 6 bells!

Our first 6-bell arrangement is the traditional Scottish Gaelic tune BUNESSAN, first published in 1888 as the setting for Mary Macdonald’s Christmas carol Child in the Manger. It’s most often sung as Eleanor Farjeon’s popular hymn Morning Has Broken, and in recent years, the tune has also been used for Baptized in Water with lyrics by Michael Saward.

Of course, there’s no need to have one arm in a sling to be able to play this piece. The music could be played by three people with two bells each, by a duo with three bells each, or by one 4-in-hand ringer with a less-experienced duet partner. Maybe even by an intrepid 6-in-hand ringer? The arrangement has a flowing piano accompaniment, and sheet music for this is included with the handbell score.
