DESCRIPTION:Ascension Lutheran Church\, Riverside IL is the venue for this concert by Michigan handbell duo Larry and Carla. The event is part of the Ascension Concert Series 2025 – 2026.  \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla are a married couple\, brought together by their passion for handbells. They first met when they were living more than 5\,000 miles apart – Larry in California and Carla in England. They’ve been playing handbell duets together since 2012. Larry arranges all of their music\, and together they run their handbell publishing company\, Choraegus\, from their home in Holland\, Michigan. \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla’s program will include a selection of beloved hymns\, classical pieces and traditional melodies. They’ll demonstrate the traditional “four-in-hand” technique\, using just eight handbells for all their music! Their program will include Amazing Grace\, O\, the Deep\, Deep Love of Jesus\, Come\, Thou Fount of Every Blessing and other tunes you’ll recognize. You’ll also find out more about handbells\, their history\, and how they’re played. Larry and Carla will be joined for part of this concert by Paula Gelpi (piano) and Christie Miller (clarinet).  \n\n\n\nThe handbell concert at Ascension Lutheran Church is free to attend.

DESCRIPTION:The Kerstmarkt-Holland 2025 is a great opportunity to see and hear local handbell duo Larry and Carla\, who will be playing traditional Christmas handbell music on two Friday evenings in November and December. \n\n\n\nThe Kerstmarkt is an open-air European-style holiday market located at the 8th Street Marketplace in Downtown Holland. There are local sellers who will talk with you about their crafts\, and sometimes you can even watch items being made! On cold winter evenings\, it’s nice to listen to beautiful handbell music as you shop. Coffee\, hot cider and food will also be available at this event. It’s your chance to try traditional Dutch treats such as pigs-in-blankets\, banket (sweet pastries with almond paste filling)\, and stroopwafels!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThings to know about the Kerstmarkt in Holland\n\n\n\nMost of the Kerstmarkt is under cover\, so you can shop for gifts comfortably there. The street isn’t icy underfoot. The city’s famous “snowmelt” system makes it safe to walk on the heated sidewalks\, even if the weather is wintry. The Kerstmarkt will give you a taste of a traditional European Christmas market\, without having to fly to Europe! There are plenty of shops and restaurants close by\, and lots to do in downtown Holland. Come for the day\, and enjoy the holiday atmosphere! \n\n\n\nThe weather can be unpredictable in December\, so dress warmly and prepare for snow or rain! Whatever the Michigan winter throws at us\, this traditional market is always worth a visit. DESCRIPTION:Ringing in Christmas! Enjoy the traditional sounds of Christmas handbells at Hudsonville Library! Michigan handbell duo Larry and Carla will be back for the seventh time with a program of handbell duets! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore about Larry and Carla\n\n\n\nLarry and Carla started playing handbells when Carla lived in England and Larry lived in California. Their shared love of these unusual musical instruments led to a chance meeting online! Larry and Carla spent nearly three years in a long-distance relationship\, and eventually they were able to go through the US visa process before getting married in California in 2012. They moved from California to Holland\, Michigan in the summer of 2016\, and became West Michigan’s Smallest Handbell Choir! They play duets using just eight handbells\, and love to show how much music can be played using such a small number of bells. This will be Larry and Carla’s seventh time at this popular Hudsonville Library holiday event. They’ll demonstrate the art of playing handbells by holding two bells in each hand. Their program will include some well-known carols\, as well as some less-familiar holiday tunes from around the world. You’ll also hear music played on a set of of handchimes\, and perhaps even have a chance to try playing them! It’s an opportunity to work with a large group of musicians to prepare a concert to share\, in a place that means so much to us. The music is always varied\, challenging and exciting\, and designed to appeal to a variety of musical tastes. Whether you love energetic original compositions\, beautiful sacred works\, classical pieces or familiar traditional melodies\, there will always be something in the Week of Handbells concert that will appeal to you. It’s unlikely that you will ever get to see a concert that features such a huge number of handbells and handchimes! \n\n\n\nThis year’s concert will be on Thursday\, August 14th\, 2025\, at 7:30pm\, at the John M. Hall Auditorium at Bay View. Admission is free\, and there will be an offering to benefit the Bay View Association Music Scholarship Fund. There’s no need to book tickets in advance\, but we recommend arriving in plenty of time to get good seats\, because it’s a popular concert!

DESCRIPTION:Bay View Campus Club will hold its annual Memorial Service on Tuesday\, August 5th\, 2025. Bay View’s local handbell duo Larry and Carla will again be playing handbells at the event.  \n\n\n\nCampus Club has been in existence for more than 100 years\, and has the motto “Where Strangers Become Friends”. It’s a group for men and women of all ages who play indoor games (such as bridge and mah jongg)\, outdoor games (including lawn bowling and croquet)\, enjoy off-season social potlucks\, and hold educational programs on Tuesday evenings\, featuring speakers with a wide variety of expertise. Campus Club raises money during the season for the Manna Food Project.The Campus Club Memorial Service is where club members take time to remember and honor the friends and family members who are no longer with us. The names of those who have passed during the last year will be read out\, and a bell will ring for each name\, as we give thanks for lives well lived\, and the lasting friendships made in our beautiful Bay View.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Bay View Campus Club Memorial Service will take place under the large Event Tent. Larry and Carla will play a handbell duet prelude\, so you’re welcome to arrive early\, and listen to music as you take your seats. This is a private event for residents and guests of Freedom Village.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla have been performing handbell duets at Freedom Village since soon after they moved to Holland from California in the summer of 2016. They have performed concerts for the residents\, at Christmas and at other times of the year\, and are happy to be returning for this Vespers Service in February. If you’ve never visited Holland\, Michigan in May\, you should give it some serious thought\, because the annual Tulip Time Festival is well worth seeing!  \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla are West Michigan’s smallest handbell choir. They play a variety of handbell duets using just 8 bells\, and aim to demonstrate that handbell performances aren’t just beautiful to listen to\, but interesting to watch too! Coffee and hot cider will be available to help you stay warm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the Kerstmarkt is under cover\, so you can shop for gifts comfortably there. The market is located in downtown Holland\, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants close by. There’s enough to do that you could easily turn a visit to the Kerstmarkt into a day trip. The city’s famous “snowmelt” system makes it safe to walk on the heated sidewalks\, even if the weather is wintry. The Kerstmarkt will give you a taste of a traditional European Christmas market\, without having to fly to Europe!  \n\n\n\nHere’s hoping for a bit less snow at the Kersmarkt-Holland 2023! They welcome any musicians with at least a high-school-level proficiency in their chosen instrument.  \n\n\n\nZCB director Rose Wiersma earned a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in music education\, music theory\, and clarinet performance. She gained her Master of Music degree as a Woodwind Specialist from Western Michigan University. Her advanced studies included Michigan State University and a summer studying in London. She has directed bands at Coopersville Area Public Schools and Grand Valley State University as a woodwind instructor.   \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla are West Michigan’s smallest handbell choir! There’s enough to do in the town\, that you could easily turn a visit to the Kerstmarkt into a day trip. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the traditional sounds of Christmas handbells at Hudsonville Library! Michigan handbell duo Larry and Carla will be back for the fourth time with a program of handbell duets!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarry and Carla are West Michigan’s smallest handbell choir. They met on a website for handbell musicians when Larry lived in California and Carla lived in England. Their shared love of handbells led to a 3-year long-distance relationship\, and eventually to a visa process and marriage. They moved from California to Holland in the summer of  2016. Larry and Carla will again be demonstrating the art of playing handbells using the traditional “four in hand” technique. Their program will include some well-known carols\, as well as some less-familiar holiday tunes from around the world. You’ll also hear music played on a set of of handchimes\, an instrument that gives a very pure tone to traditional Christmas music. Larry and Carla will talk about the history of their bells and the music they play\, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.   \n\n\n\nPlease join us as we celebrate Christmas at Hudsonville Library. We are pleased to welcome this husband and wife duo whose repertoire extends across the entire spectrum of hymns\, classical music\, Christmas carols and folk music. They aim to demonstrate that handbell performances are not only beautiful to listen to\, but also create graceful and interesting visual art. Larry and Carla Sue will share their talent in a free concert at 5:00 pm on Sunday\, December 4. Second Reformed Church is located at 225 E. Central Avenue. No tickets required. Guests are cordially invited to remain for refreshments and for an opportunity to meet the musicians following the recital. \n\n\n\nJoin Larry and Carla to celebrate the season with beautiful music written for handbells.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Larry and Carla\n\n\n\nLarry and Carla started playing handbells in 1987; Larry in California\, and Carla in England. Carla has performed and taught extensively throughout England\, and also in Estonia\, France and the USA. Larry was a member and director of several handbell choirs in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. He is a published handbell composer\, bass handbell specialist\, and the author of The Bass Ringer’s Notebook. Larry is also a recipient of the Donald E. Allured Award for Handbell Composition.  \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla first met online on a website for handbell musicians. After a couple of years in a long-distance relationship\, they were married in California in 2012 and started performing handbell duets together. In 2016\, they moved to Holland\, Michigan. They arrange all their own music\, both secular and sacred\, and run their own publishing company\, Choraegus. SUMMARY:Handbells at the Kerstmarkt in Downtown Holland
DESCRIPTION:Handbells are coming back to the Kerstmarkt in Downtown Holland! Local handbell duo Larry and Carla will again be playing traditional Christmas handbell music at the event in 2022. Saturday\, November 19 marks the start of the 2022 event!  \n\n\n\nThe Kerstmarkt is an annual open-air European-style Christmas market located at the 8th Street Marketplace in Downtown Holland. Come and listen to beautiful festive music as you shop for unique handcrafted gifts\, and locally-made holiday treats. Coffee and hot cider will be available to help you stay warm! \n\n\n\nWe’ve been fortunate that the weather has been kind to us every time we’ve played at this annual event. Thankfully\, we haven’t had to cope with the kind of extreme cold that would make what we do impossible. Handbells generally don’t appreciate cold temperatures. We notice the change in the sound of the bells when we play outdoors in winter\, but the worst of the weather generally seems to wait until after Christmas! Most of the Kerstmarkt is under cover\, so you can shop for gifts comfortably there. The market is located in Downtown Holland\, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants close by. SUMMARY:Monday Musical Club Concert
DESCRIPTION:Michigan handbell duo Larry and Carla will be performing a shared concert with Gary and Martha Matthews\, as guests of the Monday Musical Club of Southwestern Michigan. The Monday Musical Club concert will feature an exciting program\, with handbells\, flute\, piano\, trumpet\, whistles and vocals.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gary and Martha Matthews\n\n\n\nGary Matthews holds music degrees in Organ\, Music Education and Sacred Music\, and earned a doctorate in Worship Studies. He is also a published composer. He served as Pastor of Worship and the Arts at Highland Park Baptist Church in Southfield\, MI\, and at Christ Memorial Church in Holland. Gary is known for his virtuosic playing\, as well as his tender expression on piano\, organ\, trumpet and voice.  \n\n\n\nMartha Matthews holds a Bachelors in Music Education and a Masters in Flute Performance. She has played principal flute with Florida Symphonic Pops\, Florida Wind Symphony\, Gold Coast Opera\, Gold Coast Ballet and the Washington Idaho Symphony. In concert with Gary\, she plays flute\, whistles\, bells and piano.  \n\n\n\nAbout Larry and Carla Sue\n\n\n\nLarry and Carla started playing handbells in 1987; Larry in California\, and Carla in England. Carla has performed and taught extensively throughout England\, and also in Estonia\, France and the USA. Larry was a member and director of several handbell choirs in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. He is a published handbell composer\, bass handbell specialist\, and the author of The Bass Ringer’s Notebook. Larry is also a recipient of the Donald E. Allured Award for Handbell Composition.  \n\n\n\nLarry and Carla first met online on a website for handbell musicians. After a couple of years in a long-distance relationship\, they were married in California in 2012 and started performing handbell duets together. They arrange all their own music\, both secular and sacred\, and run their own publishing company\, Choraegus. Larry and Carla aim to demonstrate that handbell performances are not only beautiful to listen to\, but can also be graceful and interesting to watch.  \n\n\n\nMonday’s program will include the first-ever performance of a new flute part for Larry Sue’s arrangement of Blessed Assurance.  \n\n\n\nThe Monday Musical Club of Southwestern Michigan is a non-profit philanthropic and educational organization dedicated to music education and promotion of creative and performing arts. The Monday Musical Club has a rich history of providing the local community with a variety of top quality musicians\, dancers and other performers.

DESCRIPTION:Holland-based handbell duo Larry and Carla will be returning to play handbells at Central United Methodist Church in\, Muskegon. They will play several of their 8-bell duets during the morning worship service. Larry and Carla last played handbells at Central United Methodist Church in November 2020\, during online services. Before that\, they played in August 2019\, which seems like a long time ago! It’s exciting to be back to in-person worship services at this beautiful church. Handbells will be featured in the prelude\, offertory and postlude. You’ll hear a lively arrangement of Holy Manna\, their arrangement of David Evans’ beautiful Lucerna Laudoniae (For the Beauty of the Earth)\, the popular Come\, Thou Fount of Every Blessing\, and the lively hymn To God Be the Glory.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHandbells make a beautiful addition to a worship service\, wedding ceremony or memorial service. A handbell duo takes up less room than a traditional full-size handbell choir; ideal for venues where space is limited. SUMMARY:The Bay View Week of Handbells 2022
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to the Bay View Week of Handbells 2022. More than 100 handbell musicians will be performing some beautiful and challenging music under the baton of director Fred Gramann. \n\n\n\nThe 2020 and 2021 events had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. This year’s event will be a happy reunion for so many of the handbell musicians! For the last two years\, smaller handbell events have taken place on the Bay View campus\, including duet performances. This year\, we’re all thankful to be able to offer the traditional concert in the John M. Hall Auditorium again. Here’s a photo of the small gathering at Bay View in 2021:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s an example of the type of music you’ll hear at the concert in the auditorium. This is Larry’s original composition A Minor Crash\, performed by the musicians at the 2019 Week of Handbells: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe concert for the Bay View Week of Handbells 2022 will be held on Thursday\, August 18th\, at 7:30pm. The venue will be the John M. Hall Auditorium\, 1715 Encampment Avenue\, Petoskey\, Michigan.  \n\n\n\nAdmission is free\, and an offering will be taken to benefit the Bay View Association Music Scholarship Fund. SUMMARY:Christmas Handbell Duets in Grand Haven (Private Event)
DESCRIPTION:Holland-based handbell duo Larry and Carla will be presenting a program of Christmas handbell duets for residents of The Village at the Pines in Grand Haven. Residents will hear traditional seasonal music from around the world\, played on Malmark handbells and handchimes. We’ll talk about the history of our instruments\, and the techniques used in playing them. Audience members will also have the chance to ask all their burning questions about handbells!  \n\n\n\nWe’re happy to be returning to the Village at the Pines for the second time. This is a private event for residents of this Grand Haven senior community only.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to book Larry and Carla to play handbell duets for your event\, you can find more information on our website. The traditional sound of handbell music is perfect for creating a festive atmosphere at a holiday event. We can also play beautiful music for worship services during Advent and Christmas.
