SUMMARY:Handbells at the Holland Kerstmarkt
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to playing handbells at the Holland Kerstmarkt again in 2021!   \n\n\n\nHandbell duo Larry and Carla will again be playing traditional Christmas handbell music at the Kerstmarkt. This is an annual open-air European-style Christmas market located at the 8th Street Marketplace in Downtown Holland. Come and listen to beautiful festive music as you shop for unique\, handcrafted gifts and locally-made holiday treats. Coffee and hot cider will be available to help you stay warm! \n\n\n\nWe’ve been fortunate that the weather has been kind to us every time we’ve played at this annual event. Thankfully\, we haven’t had to cope with the kind of extreme cold that would make what we do impossible. Handbells generally don’t appreciate cold temperatures. We notice the change in the sound of the bells when we play outdoors in winter\, but the worst of the weather generally seems to wait until after Christmas! Most of the Kerstmarkt is under cover\, so you can shop for gifts comfortably there. The market is located in Downtown Holland\, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants close by. Here’s a video of one of our performances from the 2018 Kerstmarkt: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe played handbells at the Holland Kerstmarkt in 2020\, and the masks proved surprisingly good at keeping our faces warm!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe market is at its most festive after dark. We hope to see you there in 2021!

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the traditional sounds of Christmas at Hudsonville Library! Michigan handbell duo Larry and Carla will be back for the third time with a program of handbell duets. Ringing in the Holidays will be the season finale of the library’s Friends Present series for 2021.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLarry and Carla are West Michigan’s smallest handbell choir. They met on a website for handbell musicians when Larry lived in California and Carla lived in England. Their shared love of handbells led to a 3-year long-distance relationship\, and eventually to a visa process and marriage. They moved from California to Holland in the summer of  2016. Larry and Carla will again be demonstrating the art of playing handbells using the traditional “four in hand” technique. Their program will include some well-known carols\, as well as some less-familiar holiday tunes from around the world. You’ll hear music played on a set of of handchimes\, and a restored set of antique Taylor bells from England. Larry and Carla will talk about the history of these beautiful instruments\, and the techniques involved in playing them. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.  \n\n\n\nYou’ll be able to enjoy refreshments and social time as we celebrate Christmas at Hudsonville Library. We look forward to welcoming you to this popular annual event\, presented by the Friends of the Gary Byker Memorial Library.

The traditional sound of handbell music is perfect for creating a festive atmosphere at a holiday event. We can also play beautiful music for worship services during Advent and Christmas. DESCRIPTION:Handbell Happenings – at the Bay View Association!As you’ll probably be aware\, the 2021 Bay View Week of Handbells concert had to be canceled/postponed because of COVID-19 concerns. An event of this type and size has to be planned months in advance. With the uncertain nature of the virus\, travel restrictions\, and the need to keep the musicians and audience safe\, the wisest decision was to postpone the event for another year. However\, some of the usual participants are making plans for a small gathering in the big events tent at Bay View instead.Handbell duo (and Bay View Association members) Larry and Carla will play handbell duets\, from around 3:30pm in the big tent near the John M. Hall Auditorium on Thursday\, August 19th. You’re welcome to come and listen\, see the bells at close range\, and ask us any burning questions about handbells.A little later\, some of the ringers who usually participate in the annual Week of Handbells will be joining us. From around 5:00pm\, we’ll all play some handbell music together. This part of the event is designed primarilyas a gathering for the handbell people\, but anyone is welcome to drop by at any point to meet the ringers and listen to the music. It won’t be the same as the usual annual handbell concert\, because the music will be completelyunrehearsed\, but it’s a chance to see and hear handbell ringing in an informal setting at Bay View this summer. We all hope to be able to participate in the usual handbell concert in August 2022!We’ll be observing COVID-19 safety measures for this event. DESCRIPTION:Returning to the San Francisco Bay Area for a concert!  \nJust three years ago\, Larry and Carla Sue left the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to Holland\, Michigan. Since then\, they have spent their time proving that yes\, you can play eight bells with only two ringers\, and they’ve built a thriving online music business in the process. Now they’re back in the Bay Area to showcase their talents as a duo\, and feature their music. \nLarry and Carla first met when they started chatting via an online handbell community. Their in-person meeting was delayed (since Carla lived in England and Larry in California)\, but a year after they finally connected at a handbell event in 2010\, they were engaged. They have been arranging music for handbells and performing duets together ever since. So far\, their performances have taken them to Georgia\, Pennsylvania\, Nebraska\, Michigan\, and New Jersey\, and they have been featured at weddings\, memorials\, concerts\, corporate events\, worship services\, holiday events\, classes\, workshops\, and even on television. \nThis dynamic duo plays with an ease that showcases what can be accomplished with just two ringers and only eight handbells.
